I {heart} Rhody
just published a great entry about
Eastside Marketplace

The description of the blog says it all: New Rhode Islanders' Journeys in Our Adopted Home State     Join Boliyou and The Bear as we learn our way around the state, exploring the sights, sounds and tastes of Rhode Island.

"We were very impressed by the friendliness of the staff, the cleanliness of the store, and the selection. There also seemed to be plenty of staff available if we needed help. Bear insists that we start doing our weekly grocery shopping here, despite the distance."
"We came for "Grill to Give," a weekly event where you buy a plate of themed barbecue dinner for $4, and the proceeds benefit the Rhode Island Food Bank.
This week's meal was "Mediterranean: Grilled Chicken Kabobs, Watermelon and Cucumber Salad, Ice Cold Beverages & Dessert." There was also dipping sauces includng tahini and cucumber dip. Again, the staff was very friendly, and the food was plentiful and delicious. The $4 price tag is a bargain anyway, and having proceeds benefit the Food Bank makes it a win-win."

We are certainly happy to join Boliyou and The Bear as they learn their way around the state, and we're glad we made a favorable impression. We thank them for their support of our Grill to Give event and hope everyone follows along with them on their continued adventures in the Ocean State.

Kristen, Linda and Ed from Rhode Island Vegan Awareness came to Eastside Marketplace on Monday to help give out some very useful information to vegans or anyone interested in a vegan diet and lifestyle. Compassionate living goes beyond vegan food choices. Instead of supporting products that are harmful to other animals, people, and the earth, vegans strive to make consumer choices that are kinder to everyone. These products can include toiletries, cosmetics, cleaners, and household items, and much more. Look for labels that say "vegan, no animal ingredients or byproducts".

Rhode Island Vegan Awareness is one of our newest Demo Partners. We look forward to welcoming them back soon.

Eat Your Vegetables Pasta Sauce
by Joslin Foods

Eastside Marketplace
Saturday, June 12

Joslin Foods is a licensed food wholesaler in Dartmouth, MA that is owned and operated by Jennifer Joslin Cincotta. It is there that a unique pasta sauce was created after several exhausting years of begging and pleading with her 3 kids to Eat Your Vegetables! Anyone who has kids knows that getting them to eat vegetables can be trying at best, and to have all your kids actually like the same kind of food is next to impossible. Jennifer realized, however, that there were two foods that all 3 of her kids would eat without a complaint-- pasta and pizza. So She went on a mission to hide as many vegetables as possible in that magic food called tomato sauce.
Now it's time to share Jennifer's creation with all the other exasperated parents and grandparents out there! We hope you and your kids enjoy Jennifer's pasta sauce as much we do!

Maria Tortolani from Cold Fusion was here Saturday afternoon to give out samples of Cold Fusion gelato... One of our favorites. Founded in 2001, Cold Fusion Gelato has always been family-owned and operated. In a past life, their Grand Pooh-Bah and fearless leader was a Wall Street banker who got tired of being, well, a Wall Street banker. He realized that he'd rather make gelato and sorbet that made people smile! Each of their gelato and sorbet flavors are made by a person, not by a factory, and they always follow the truest Italian traditions. Their scrumptious frozen desserts are made using the freshest possible ingredients: fruits plucked from the tree at their moment of peak ripeness, as well as the world's finest nuts, finest chocolates, and rarest herbs and spices. Artisan means that their product is hand-made, using all-natural ingredients sourced locally from people they know and trust. The result of all of this love and dedication is a silky, cool, uplifting fusion of flavor. Stop in and try some Cold Fusion Gelato and support our growing family of Demo Partners. Cold Fusion Gelato is good stuff.

  Cafe Classes - Spring 2010

06/08/10   Deb Miller   Summer Salads.

Tuesday, June 8 was the grand finale of our spring Cafe Classes. Chef Deb Miller taught a capacity crowd how to make four different easy and satisfying summer salads. Deb started with an easy Carrot Slaw with Cashews and followed with a light but hearty Chipotle Potato Salad. After everyone had a taste of both, Deb got a little more serious with her unique Curried Cantaloupe with Chicken Salad that was served on a bed of mixed greens and finished up with Thai Cole Slaw, an interesting mix of crunchy vegetables and a spicy dressing.

More than half of the participants had internet coupons for the class. Sign up for Email notifications or check our website regularly for the fall schedule. Chef Andy Juarez, Chef Deb Miller and floral manager John Drohan will be a few of the returning favorites. Suggestions for future cooking classes included seafood salads, open-faced sandwiches and more... Maybe even grilling. We'll resume classes again in the fall but don't forget we're grilling to give if you're willing to give. Our Grill To Give events start Thursday July 8 from 4 to 6:30 and continue every Thursday for July and August. Same great chefs, more great food and an extra half hour longer. Help us raise money for a good cause - the Rhode Island Food Bank.

Go Green With
Eastside Marketplace

Friday May 21, 2010

Janice Anderson from Eastside Marketplace was interviewed by WPRI Fox Providence's Green Team Friday, May 21. Watch a video of Janice's appearance below or check out the online article.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Many grocery shoppers now won't leave home without them. But could reusable bags actually be more harm than good?

A new study from Canada found that two thirds of reusable bags contained some type of harmful bacteria. Food safety expert Lori Pivarnik said the bacteria can often come from leaky meat packages.

"Those juices will then get into a reusable bag and since we are not throwing those bags away, those juices will stay there," said Dr. Lori Pivarnik.

If the bags are then used again for ready to eat items like cheese or fruit, that's when contamination problems can occur. To prevent these problems, Janice Anderson at Providence's Eastside Marketplace always offers to wrap certain items separately.

Anderson said "That's if they have meat, to wrap it up into a separate bag before we put it into a reusable bag so the meat won't leak onto their other groceries."

Pivarnik said customers can also use the plastic bags placed just above the meat section. In addition, she suggests designating bags which are only used for holding the same types of food on future trips to the store. Washing the bags also helps.

"We wash them with soap, sometimes a little bleach, and then we put them out to dry," said Berta Orellana.

In the end, it's not about getting rid of reusable bags, just using common sense.

Pivarnik said it's best to buy heavy duty reusable bags because they will last longer, even after repeated washes.

  Cooking Classes - Spring 2010

Back by popular demand... We're having cooking classes again this spring!

05/04/10   Chef Andy Juarez   Tex Mex treats for Cinco de Mayo

Class participants learned to make some authentic Tex Mex favorites to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The main dish was Fideo Con Pollo. Fideo is the Spanish word for a noodle of any type. In Mexico it refers to a type of pasta similar to capellini or vermicelli. In Spain it refers to short noodles used in place of rice in some dishes.
Side dishes included a delicious crunchy Cabbage Slaw and a Tostada Salad. Chef Andy topped off the meal with ice cold pitchers of Texas Sweet Tea for everyone to enjoy.
Cinco de Mayo (Fifth of May) is a holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and the state of Puebla in Mexico. The holiday commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th , 1862 under the leadership of Ignacio Zaragozo Seguin.
Cinco de Mayo is not an “obligated” federal holiday in Mexico but a holiday that is voluntarily observed in limited parts of the country. The United States and other countries around the world celebrated this holiday more as Mexican heritage and pride. Also done voluntarily.
Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, which is actually September 16, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

Mrs. Adler and Mrs. Nelson, past president of the Miriam Hospital Women's Association, were at Eastside Marketplace Monday to promote their newest cookbook. The Proceeds from the sale of the book go to a worthy cause.

Simply More Delicious represents the best of Rhode Island’s rich culinary heritage and its recipes incorporate many of our tiny state’s most delicious assets: blueberries, farm fresh vegetables, fresh fish and our state bird... Chicken (really).

Simply More Delicious carries on the tradition established more than 30 years ago by The Miriam Hospital’s Women’s Association when it published the original best-selling cookbook, Simply Delicious. Find out more about their history.

A delectable compilation of some 500 recipes, Simply More Delicious is a collection of new and treasured recipes, brought to you by Rhode Island’s best-known restaurants, markets and caterers, local amateur chefs and members of The Women’s Association.

Simply More Delicious is more than a collection of treasured and delicious recipes. It also tells the history of the Miriam Hospital Women’s Association and how, over 80 years ago, a determined group of Rhode Island women raised enough money in four weeks to start a hospital. That support continues today as an organization 800 women (and some men) strong continues to support The Miriam Hospital through its volunteer services and continued fundraising efforts.

Stop in and buy a copy of Simply More Delicious and support a good cause. We have them on the shelf in our cookbook section. The Miriam Hospital Women's Association and Lifespan are members of our growing family of Demo Partners.
